Праздник Крещения имеет два названия: «Богоявление» и «Крещение Господа Бога и Спаса нашего Иисуса Христа». На первом месте − Богоявление, смысл которого со временем стал пониматься как раскрытие миру тайны Триединого Бога в момент Крещения Иисуса Христа. Это глас Бога Отца «Ты Сын Мой возлюбленный, в Котором Мое благоволение», выходящий из воды Сын и сошедший с небес в виде голубя, Святой Дух. Особенностью богоявленского богослужения является освящение воды, причем дважды: в крещенский сочельник и в самый день праздника. Эта традиция восходит к древней христианской практике крещения оглашенных после утренней службы Богоявления. В крещенский сочельник принято соблюдать строгий пост. Свое название «сочельник» этот день получил от постного блюда сочива. Его готовили из пшеницы или риса, смешанных с орехами, маком и медом.

This is the voice of God the Father, "You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased," the Son coming out of the water and descending from heaven in the form of a dove, the Holy Spirit. A feature of the Epiphany divine service is the consecration of water, and twice: on Epiphany Christmas Eve and on the very day of the holiday. This tradition goes back to the ancient Christian practice of baptizing catechumens after the morning service of the Epiphany. On Epiphany Eve, it is customary to observe a strict fast. This day got its name "Christmas Eve" from the Lenten dish sochiv. It was made from wheat or rice mixed with nuts, poppy seeds and honey.
