У каждого народа есть поэт, прозаик и драматург, при имени которого человек любой нации может сказать: это гордость Англии... или Норвегии... или Италии...Для Швеции такое имя - Сельма Лагерлеф (1858 - 1940). Пятидесятилетие писательницы (в 1908 году) превратилось на ее родине в национальный праздник, а столетний юбилей по решению Всемирного Совета мира отмечали люди во многих странах земного шара, где читают и любят ее произведения. Один из романов замечательной шведской писательницы - "Сага о Йесте Берлинге" - переведен на все европейские языки. Всемирную известность получила детская книжка "Путешествие Нильса Хольгерсона по Швеции" (1906 - 1907), в которой перед маленькими читателями открывается поэтическая история страны, облик ее городов и окраин, обычаи жителей, легенды, сказочные традиции саг.
Если попытаться определить целиком жанр творчества Сельмы Лагерлёф, то окажется, что ее романы и рассказы, пьесы, стихи и сказки - все написано в форме и традициях скандинавских саг.
Очень, очень давно возникла эта форма. Еще тогда, когда люди не только в холодной Скандинавии, а, пожалуй, ни в одной стране мира не умели писать. У нас в России сказания о богатырях и их удивительных подвигах называются былинами. А в снежной Норвегии и зеленой Швеции эти предания называют сагами.
Редко рождается такой литературный герой, который становится не просто персонажем рассказа или сказки, но и олицетворением всей нации. Герой романа Сельмы Лагерлёф "Сага о Йесте Берлинге" стал в глазах читателей всего мира именно таким национальным героем Швеции, выражением народного духа вольности, мечты о красоте и достоинстве человека. Недаром в 1909 году создательнице этой великолепной книги была присуждена высшая литературная премия. В решении жюри о присуждении Сельме Лагерлёф Нобелевской премии говорилось, что она дана "за благородный идеализм и богатство фантазии". А в 1914 году писательница была избрана членом Шведской академии.
"Богатство фантазии" Сельмы Лагерлёф действительно неисчерпаемо, и проявляется эта творческая фантазия в удивительных, причудливых, прекрасных формах, событиях, образах. Казалось бы, откуда взяться чудесам, если маленький Нильс Хольгерсон - самый обыкновенный "вредный" и ленивый мальчишка, который не учит уроков, таскает за хвост кота и больше всего на свете любит дразнить гусей, не слушаться взрослых да хныкать? Однако именно на его долю выпадает великое множество приключений, волшебных превращений, опасностей и даже... подвигов! Да, да, наш Нильс, вечно пристающий к взрослым с жалобами и никогда никому не сделавший хорошего, этот самый Нильс совершит такие подвиги, которые не под силу самым примерным паинькам и зубрилам! На долгие месяцы наш маленький герой, почти забыв родной язык, обретает чудесный дар понимать говор зверей и птиц. Он поднимется над землей и увидит свою деревню, озера и леса, да и всю огромную страну... В странствиях Нильсу откроется не только вся Скандинавия и "Лапландия - гусиная страна", но и другое, пожалуй, самое важное в жизни - что такое дружба, что такое помощь в беде, что такое любовь к тем, кто слабее тебя и кому очень нужна твоя защита. И он, такой маленький, с помощью крылатых друзей осмелится вступить в опасный бой с хитрым, сильным врагом - самим Лисом Смирре.! И как бы ни шипел, ни лаял и ни прыгал обманутый Лис, храбрый Нильс одолеет его !

The fiftieth anniversary of the writer (in 1908) turned into a national holiday in her homeland, and the centenary, according to the decision of the World Peace Council, was celebrated by people in many countries of the world where her works are read and loved. One of the novels by the remarkable Swedish writer, The Saga of Yest Burling, has been translated into all European languages. The world-famous book for children was Niels Holgerson's Travel to Sweden (1906 - 1907), in which the poetic history of the country, the appearance of its cities and suburbs, the customs of the inhabitants, legends, and fabulous traditions of the sagas are revealed to young readers.
If you try to determine the whole genre of Selma Lagerlöf’s creativity, it turns out that her novels and short stories, plays, poems and fairy tales are all written in the form and traditions of the Scandinavian sagas.
Very, very long time ago this form arose. Even when people, not only in cold Scandinavia, but, perhaps, in no country in the world, could write. In Russia, the legends about the heroes and their amazing deeds are called epics. And in snowy Norway and green Sweden, these traditions are called sagas.
Such a literary hero is rarely born who becomes not just a character in a story or fairy tale, but also an embodiment of the whole nation. In the eyes of readers of the whole world, the hero of Selma Lagerlof’s novel The Saga of Jest Berling became such a national hero of Sweden, an expression of the national spirit of liberty, a dream of the beauty and dignity of man. No wonder in 1909, the creator of this magnificent book was awarded the highest literary prize. The decision of the jury on the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Selma Lagerlöf said that it was given "for the noble idealism and the richness of fantasy." And in 1914, the writer was elected a member of the Swedish Academy.
The "wealth of fantasy" by Selma Lagerlöf is really inexhaustible, and this creative fantasy is manifested in amazing, bizarre, beautiful forms, events, images. It would seem, where can miracles come from, if little Nils Holgerson is the most ordinary “harmful” and lazy boy who does not learn lessons, drags the cat’s tail and more than anything else loves to tease geese, disobey adults and whimper? However, it is precisely to his lot that a great many adventures, magical transformations, dangers and even ... exploits fall out! Yes, yes, our Niels, always pestering adults with complaints and never doing anything good to anyone, this same Niels will perform such feats that are beyond the power of the most exemplary goodies and crampons! For many months, our little hero, having almost forgotten his native language, gains a wonderful gift to understand the dialect of animals and birds. He will rise above the ground and see his village, lakes and forests, and the whole vast country ... In the wanderings of Niels, not only the whole of Scandinavia and "Lapland - the goose country" will be discovered, but also another, perhaps the most important thing in life - what is friendship, what is help in trouble, what is love for those who are weaker than you and who really need your protection. And he, so small, with the help of winged friends, dares to engage in a dangerous battle with a cunning, powerful enemy - Fox Smirre himself.! And no matter how hissed nor hissed nor barked or jumped the deceived Fox, the brave Niels will overcome him!
