"War of the Worlds" - a radio show of the novel of the same name on the air of the CBS station on October 30, 1938. The listeners took a performance staged by Mercury Theater on the Air, led by Orson Welles, for a real news report: more than a million residents of the northeastern United States believed in the Martian attack and panicked.On the eve of Halloween in 1938, artists of the Mercury Theater on the Air decided to put in their hourly radio program the novel by Herbert Wells "The War of the Worlds", transferring it to New Jersey in 1939. At the beginning of the hour one of the artists announced the beginning of the radio performance, after which the weather forecast was sounded, and then the concert of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra began (in fact an orchestra led by Bernard Herrmann). Soon the music was interrupted by an urgent message that strange flashes were observed on Mars. Then supposedly famous professor-astronomer Princeton Richard Pearson (voiced by Orson Wells) denied the possibility of existence of life on Mars. The concert continued, but was soon again interrupted by a special news release. CBS reporter Carl Phillips (Frank Reedick) from the scene reported on the landing of a metal cylinder in the town of Grovers Mill in the county of Mercer. Soon the cylinder was transformed into a car, heat rays scorching everything around. Phillips was shouting something and trying to put out the mobile studio, the connection was interrupted. Professor Pearson began to talk about the technical level of the Martians, then the head of the National Guard of New Jersey declared a state of emergency and led his troops into battle.
The weapons of the earthlings were unable to withstand the newcomers, new deadly vehicles continued to land and destroy people and infrastructure, crowds of people fled away from the invaders. The unnamed Interior Minister (Kenny Delmar) turned to the nation (the radio station banned the portrayal of President Franklin Roosevelt's address, but Delmar still portrayed Roosevelt's voice). Soon a reporter came to the connection with the artillery unit, which fired the Martians. They were also attacked by bombers, which were destroyed by the rays of death, although they were able to dump one of the alien vehicles. The Martians used poison gases, and the connection was interrupted again. A CBS employee (Ray Collins) climbed onto the roof of the CBS Building, from where he saw several Martian vehicles crossing the Hudson River. He also felt a poisonous smell, after which the broadcast was interrupted. Through hindrances, an amateur radio broke through, trying to communicate with at least someone. Only at this moment (approximately 40 minutes after the start of the production) the announcer recalled the fictitiousness of the events described. Then Professor Pearson described the end of the alien attack, which was ruined by the lack of immunity to terrestrial bacteria. At the end of the hour, Wells left the image and congratulated listeners on Halloween.
