Leading:

Mass riots in Paris. Residents of the French capital, dissatisfied with the resignation of Finance Minister Jacques Necker and the internal politics of the kingdom, stormed the famous prison Bastille. The rebels arrested the commandant and hanged several officers. All prisoners were released. It is worth noting that the impetus to the beginning of the riots was given by the speech of the Paris lawyer Camille Demoulen. After taking the fortress, he praised the rebels and invited them to fight for their rights more persistently.

Desmoulins:

The Parisians committed a great deed that will remain forever in the memory of our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The inhabitants of the city seized the prison that we hated, which for many years has been dominating our freedom. For centuries, this dark, damp, disfiguring face of Paris, the structure stood tall near the Saint-Antoine Gate. It symbolized corruption, debauchery, despotism and oppression of the masses. Today we put an end to this and opened the way to freedom for all honest French.

Leading:

The Parisians released the seven prisoners of the Bastille. These people have been in prison for several years. They complained that they were mistreated and in every possible way restricted their rights. One of the prisoners of Comte de Lorge spent more than 40 years in the Bastille. In an interview with us, he admitted that he no longer remembers why he was put there.

Comte de Lorge:

I was very surprised when I learned that France was ruled by Louis XIV. The fact is that his grandfather, Louis XV, put me in prison. I do not know what I did and what I did wrong, but I am sure that they have slandered me. Now I am very glad that this whole nightmare is over. You can shave, take a walk in Paris, listen to how the birds sing. In the Bastille it was difficult, I was mistreated and constantly violated my rights. I hope more I will not come back.

Leading:

The commandant of the Bastille, the Marquis de Lone, was forced to surrender the fortress to the insurgents. During the assault, he tried to blow up the prison, but he was stopped by his own officers. Now Marquis de Lone is being held captive by the rebels, it is likely that he will be executed. The commandant regrets that he did not destroy the fortress.

Marquis de Lone:

I had to blow up the Bastille. It is better to destroy the fortress than to give it to enemies. It is better to die on the battlefield than to be captured. These suckers stopped me when I walked into a powder magazine with a wick in my hands. They disarmed me and gave up cowardly. Cowards, afraid to take a heroic death. But the Bastille explosion would be the brightest and the loudest explosion in the whole history of France.

Leading:

Meanwhile, in Versailles, where the royal court is now located, the announcement of the capture of the Bastille caused a serious stir. We tried to contact the king, but he declined to comment. “His Majesty Louis XIV deigns to be too sad for the Paris events,” the Versailles press service told us. However, Queen Marie-Antoineta gave our radio station an interview in which she admitted that she was surprised by the latest events.

Marie Antoinette:

In all this there is something deeply evil and wrong. Capturing the Bastille - a step radically wrong. I'm not talking about the fact that this is treason. Frankly, we are all very surprised. France, after all, lives very well. The yard gets everything they need, the courtiers are satisfied with life, and ordinary people have to eat cake for a couple of years, because, they say, their bread has run out. But I told my whiny husband that if he did not keep people in check, then the people would go mad. So he got mad. I can not imagine what they are not happy with.

Leading:

For several centuries, the Bastille was the most terrible prison in France. More information about the history of this fortress in the report of the Echo of Moscow correspondent:

Dossier:

The most terrible castle of France. Fortress of death. The stronghold of the executioners, as soon as they did not call the Bastille at different times. The castle, which was built to protect Paris by the end of the fifteenth century, turned into a prison, more terrible of which cannot be found either in France or in Europe. The decision to keep the prisoners here was made by King Louis XI, who throughout his life was very worried about his safety.
