Собирались на битвы жестокиеСлавных ратей ладьи крутобокие -
Дрогнет враг пред стальною дружиною,
Лишь пройти бы тропой лебединою.
Всех собрал князь: друзей, побратимов ли,
И вассалов с добытой в боях земли,
Отроков, давших клятву служения,
И певца – чтоб восславил сражение.

Долго ль, коротко ль море бескрайнее
Им шептало напевы печальные
О тщете людских дел – прошлых, нынешних,
И о стягах, в волнах времён сгинувших.
И бойцы заглушали те шёпоты
Звоном стали, сапог тяжких топотом,
И певца понукали наказами
Тешить слух боевыми рассказами.

Пели струны о славе и доблести,
И не слышно за пеньем, как шёпот волн
Разъярённым становится рокотом...
Грянул ливень, и волны жестокие
Били в щепы ладьи крутобокие,
Где ты, князь со стальною дружиною?
Славный стяг твой схоронен пучиною.
Всех собрал князь в дорогу на все века -
И никто не добрался до берега,
Лишь певец, чтоб струной правдовестною
Рассказать о сражении... с бездною.
