For many years, Buddy DeFranco fans have wondered why the popularity of the clarinet as a jazz instrument declined significantly after World War II and the swing era - why numerous improvisers did not apply Charlie Parker's ideas to the clarinet, and why the clarinet is persistently associated with swing / Dixieland / Classic jazz and almost never applied in be-bop, post-bop, avant-garde, soul jazz? Perhaps the reason is the instrument itself - it is difficult for the performer, and this is especially important when it comes to the complexities of bop. But that challenge never stopped DeFranco, who was 30 at the time of recording Mr. Clarinet for Verve in 1953. It was at this time that DeFranco was titled "the Charlie Parker of the Clarinet," and he lived up to that title with a brilliant album (Kenny Drew - piano, Milt Hinton - bass, Art Blakey - drums). Throughout the album, the DeFranco clarinet sounds completely like a bop instrument, which was definitely an innovation in those years. Whether playing standards or original material, DeFranco refuses to acknowledge the end of the era of clarinet evolution after the retirement of the greats - Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard; it is not a problem for him to get the clarinet to sound in the spirit of the 1953 bebop scene. (It should be noted that Artie Shaw also tried on clarinet for bop in the early 50s, but unfortunately he decided to retire from music in 1955.) Most of the bop-oriented recordings made by DeFranco in the 50s are worth buying into any jazz collection ; Mr. Clarinet (re-released on CD by Verve in 2002) is no exception.
