Однажды Томас Фишер копался среди материала, подготовленного для нового альбома Triptykon, и нашёл интересные вещи: неиспользованные заготовки для легендарного "To Mega Therion". Но вот удивление и оживление сменились задумчивостью. "Хм, и что мне делать с этой ерундой теперь?", - подумал Фишер. В итоге у Тома так и не появилось никакого желания возиться с выпуском неизданного раритета, а для Triptykon такой материал ну никак не подходил, поэтому музыкант не стал париться и подарил его своим норвежским кентам из Darkthrone. Так на свет появился "Arctic Thunder".В общем, уважаемый слушатель, то, что ты только что прочитал, является шутеечкой, но все мы помним про долю правды. Участники Darkthrone никогда не скрывали свою пламенную любовь к творчеству Hellhammer и ранних Celtic Frost. Да и как тут скрыть, когда слышно всё? Альбом "Total Death" был трибьютом первой волне блэка. И там даже были использованы риффы, которые фигурировали на релизах обоих упомянутых проектов Тома Фишера. Ну и, конечно, немалое влияние этих легендарных формаций было замечено в различные периоды творчества норвежцев, особенно начиная со второй половины 90-х, когда Фенриз и Ноктюрно стали во всю заигрывать с блэк-н-ролльными фишками. Ну а "Arctic Thunder" - это прямо откровенный Celtic Frost-воршип.
Однако это не последний сюрприз. Если посмотреть на динамику эволюции Darkthrone, то, опустив из вида раннее дэт-металическое творчество, можно наблюдать за довольно плавным переходом от классического блэк-метала до неклассифицируемой мешанины из блэк-, хэви-, спид-, канадского и прочих металов. "Arctic Thunder" оказывается настоящей бомбой, взорвавшей скепсис самых гипертрофированных реалистов. Darkthrone, пусть и немножко, но вспомнили про свои блэковые корни.
Как уже должно было стать ясно, это не триумфальное возвращение звучания 1992-1995 гг, но блэк-метал на "Arctic Thunder" присутствует в куда больших количествах, чем на любом другом альбоме группы за последний десяток лет. Возможно, "The Underground Resistance" можно назвать альбомом, отличающимся от серии ближайших предшественников. Но там было своего рода развитие тамошних идей. На "Arctic Thunder" же замечается этакий прыжок через те альбомы назад, к более ранним работам.
Наверное, "Arctic Thunder" больше всего похож на серию релизов, состоящую из "Ravishing Grimness", "Plaguewielder", "Hate Them" и "Sardonic Wrath". Новое творение - это своеобразное возвращение к тогдашнему звучанию, только с более выраженным уклоном в сторону звучания ранних Celtic Frost. Перед нами этакая дарктроновская версия "To Mega Therion". Если "Tundra Leech" в первую очередь попросту шокирует внезапной блэковостью, то с "Burial Bliss" в ход пускаются характерные келтикфростовские риффы.
Альбом записан в одном ключе, поэтому непросто выделить что-то особенное. Не сказать, что музыка супердрайвовая, на последних-то релизах дуэт выдавал вещи куда угарнее. Но материал крепкий, привлекает своей ностальгической дремучестью и схожестью с уже не раз упомянутой группой из Швейцарии. Ну а если всё же постараться выделить что-нибудь, то в первую очередь стоит вспомнить про "Inbred Vermin". Самое интересное в этой композиции - это её вторая половина. Она внезапно написана совсем в ином ключе, тамошняя мелодия выдалась более угрюмой, мрачной, чем любая другая на альбоме. Если бы она не была такой крутой, можно было бы упрекать авторов за нарушение целостности.
Напрашивается два вывода. Во-первых, "Arctic Thunder" - это альбом, действительно сумевший удивить. Во-вторых, его интересно слушать (что в том числе вытекает из первого). И вот что теперь ждать от Darkthrone? Известно, наверное, только самим участникам. Но об этом всём уже как-нибудь в другой раз. А пока у нас есть "Arctic Thunder".

Once Thomas Fischer was digging through the material prepared for the new Triptykon album, and found interesting things: unused templates for the legendary "To Mega Therion". This is how "Arctic Thunder" was born.In general, dear listener, what you just read is a joke, but we all remember the grain of truth. The members of Darkthrone have never hidden their passionate love for Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost. And how can you hide when you hear everything? Album "Total Death" was a tribute to the first wave of black metal. And there were even used riffs that appeared on the releases of both Tom Fisher projects mentioned. And, of course, the considerable influence of these legendary formations was noticed in various periods of the Norwegians' creativity, especially since the second half of the 90s, when Fenriz and Nocturno began to flirt with black 'n' roll chips. Well, "Arctic Thunder" is a frank Celtic Frost-vorship.
However, this is not the last surprise. If you look at the dynamics of Darkthrone's evolution, then, leaving out of sight the early death metal work, you can observe a rather smooth transition from classic black metal to an unclassified jumble of black, heavy, speed, Canadian and other metals. "Arctic Thunder" turns out to be a real bomb, exploding the skepticism of the most hypertrophied realists. Darkthrone, albeit a little, remembered their black metal roots.
As it should have already become clear, this is not a triumphant return to the sound of 1992-1995, but black metal on "Arctic Thunder" is present in much larger quantities than on any other album of the group in the last decade. Perhaps, "The Underground Resistance" can be called a different album from the series of its immediate predecessors. But there was a kind of development of the ideas there. On "Arctic Thunder" you can see a kind of jump through those albums back to earlier works.
Perhaps "Arctic Thunder" most closely resembles a series of releases consisting of "Ravishing Grimness", "Plaguewielder", "Hate Them" and "Sardonic Wrath". The new creation is a kind of return to the sound of that time, only with a more pronounced bias towards the sound of the early Celtic Frost. This is a kind of darkron version of "To Mega Therion". If "Tundra Leech" first of all simply shocks with its sudden blackness, then with "Burial Bliss" characteristic Celtic Frost riffs are used.
The album is recorded in one key, so it is not easy to highlight something special. Not to say that the music is super-drive, on the last releases the duo gave out things much more carbonated. But the material is strong, attracts with its nostalgic denseness and similarity with the already mentioned group from Switzerland. Well, if you still try to highlight something, then first of all it is worth remembering about "Inbred Vermin". The most interesting thing about this composition is its other half. It is suddenly written in a completely different key, the melody there turned out to be more gloomy, darker than any other on the album. If it weren't so cool, the authors could be blamed for violating integrity.
This leads to two conclusions. Firstly, "Arctic Thunder" is an album that really managed to surprise. Secondly, it is interesting to listen to it (which also follows from the first). Now what to expect from Darkthrone? It is probably known only to the participants themselves. But about all this some other time. Until then, we have Arctic Thunder.
