This Canadian team from Montreal is practically a solo project of Frank Marino (Francesco Antonio Marino, b. 20 November 1954). Half Italian, half Arab, this guy only graduated seven grades, then dropped out of school and joined the ranks of the hippies. As it turned out, hippies are not only peace and love, but also drugs. This fate was not spared, and Marino, whom experiments with LSD brought to a hospital bed. After undergoing treatment, Frank decided to channel his energies into a safer cause. At 16, he co-founded "Mahogany rush" with Paul Harwood on bass and Jim Ayub on drums. Marino's idol has always been Hendrix, and this fact determined his playing style for many years.
After signing a contract with a small Canadian label Kat'Ai in 1972, the band recorded their first album, Maxoom. It was sustained in the spirit of Hendrick, and the composition "Buddy" was dedicated to the great Jimi. In Canada, the record did not receive the attention it deserved, but some songs from it sounded on FM stations in the northeastern United States.
On the next two albums, Marino continued to hone his mastery of the instrument, using sharp, sentimental riffs. The "Strange universe" disc became one of the best works in the discography of "Mahogany rush". The disc contained a series of cool songs such as "Land of a 1000 Nights", "Moonlight Lady", "King Who Stole The Universe", "Satisfy Your Soul". The band continued to enjoy more popularity in the States than at home, and in 1976 the contract was renegotiated with Columbia records. After experimenting with mellotrons on "Mahogany rush IV", the Montreal trio recorded their massive album, "World anthem".
The title instrumental track and composition "Requiem for a sinner" became regulars on many North American radio stations. The following year, the band's first live album was released, entitled "Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush" (now the band began to be called that way).
In addition to his own stuff, the album also contained interesting covers of Moore's "I'm King Bee", Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and Hendrix's "Purple Haze" (this composition always closed the concerts of "Mahogany rush"). This was followed by another "live", which also concealed several pearls - "Sister change", "Woman", a cover of the Beatles "Norwegian wood". But the best work on this disc was Dilan's "All Along The Watchtower", which was constantly playing on the air. In 1980, the group expanded to a quartet, as Marino brought his brother Vince (guitar) into the band. Two records were recorded with him, after which "Mahogany rush" started having problems.
First Jim Ayub left, then the problems with the label began. In addition, interest in guitar music began to fade, and the audience now preferred the "new wave". But Frank Marino did not give up and released several solo works. He returned to the signboard "Mahogany rush" only in 2000, completely renewing the lineup and recording with it a new studio album "Eye of the storm".
