1.
Высокий холм за городом стоял,
Зловещим черным лесом окружён.
Две сотни лет шептался млад и стар,
Об ужасе, что скрыл зеленый склон.
Детей пропавших так и не нашли,
А с пастбищ пропадал домашний скот.
И стороною стали обходить
Тот холм, как будто дьявол там живёт.
Однажды в Эйлсберри всех всполошил
Трясущийся от страха почтальон.
Словам его поверить не спешил
Никто, решив что спьяну спятил он:
Ведь в дрожь бросало от его речей,
Что холм сожрал деревню и людей!
2.
Меж грязных и сырых кирпичных стен
Трепещущие тени нас вели
По мостовым, что рассыпались в тлен
К толпе визжащей медленно мы шли.
И пламени плясали языки,
И голуби ворчали тут и там,
И в барабаны били бедняки,
Молясь своим неведомым богам.
Безумный хор заголосил еще сильней -
Я пересёк последнюю черту
А в небе стая черных голубей
Взвивалась ввысь, всё дальше в темноту.
Из Запределья тысячи когтей
В наш хрупкий мир уже несут беду.
3.
Младенец-Вавилон его не помнил седины,
Во тьме времен он скрылся от людей,
Но разум человечий из безжизненной земли
Поднял его на свет, прах отряхнув с гнилых костей.
Дома, дороги, стены и покои богачей -
Безумия знак носил каждый узор,
И изваяния неведомых зверей
Насмешливо взирали со своих опор
А в самом сердце града-мертвеца
Во мрак и холод видели мы ход -
Вниз в подземелье лестница вела,
И в бездне таял каменный пролет.
Но сжалось сердце в ледяной кулак -
Чей это был внизу тяжелый шаг?
4.
Сэт Этвуд, дряхлый фермер, захотел
Колодец вырыть у дома во дворе
Лишь с Эбом он, испачканный в земле,
Копал весь день, ругался и кряхтел.
Смеялись мы над глупыми людьми
Одумайся, старик, а он всё рыл.
Потом в психушку Эба он отвёз
И поздно ночью вены себе вскрыл.
К колодцу после похорон пришел народ -
А старый дед его замуровал
Мы разобрали кладку кирпичей -
Но дна никто из нас не увидал.
Кидали камень мерять глубину,
Но слышали глухую тишину!

1.
A high hill outside the city stood
An ominous black forest is surrounded.
Two hundred years old, whispering young and old,
About the horror that hid the green slope.
The missing children were never found,
And livestock disappeared from the pasture.
And they began to bypass the side
That hill, as if the devil was living there.
Once in Aylesberry everyone was alarmed
A postman shaking with fear.
I was in no hurry to believe his words
No one, deciding that he was drunk, was crazy:
After all, it shook from his speeches,
What a hill gobbled up the village and the people!
2.
Between dirty and damp brick walls
Trembling shadows led us
On the bridge that crumbled into decay
To the crowd screeching slowly we walked.
And flames danced tongues
And the doves grumbled here and there
And the poor beat the drums
Praying to your unknown gods.
The mad choir voiced even harder -
I crossed the last line
And in the sky a flock of black doves
It soared up, farther into the darkness.
Outland Thousands of Claws
Our fragile world is already in trouble.
3.
Babylon Babylon did not remember his gray hair,
In the darkness of time he hid from people
But the human mind from a lifeless land
Raised it into the light, dusting off the dust from rotten bones.
The houses, roads, walls and chambers of the rich -
The insanity sign wore every pattern,
And statues of unknown animals
Mockingly gazed from their poles
And in the very heart of the dead city
In darkness and cold we saw a move -
Down the dungeon the stairs led
And in the abyss the stone passage melted.
But my heart clenched into an ice fist -
Whose was the heavy step downstairs?
4.
Sethwood, a decrepit farmer, wanted
Dig a well near a house in the yard
Only with Ab, he, stained in the ground,
Digging all day, cursing and grunting.
We laughed at stupid people
Think it over, old man, but he was still digging.
Then he took Eb to a psychiatric hospital
And late at night, he opened his veins.
After the funeral, the people came to the well -
And the old grandfather walled him up
We took apart the brickwork -
But none of us saw the bottom.
They threw a stone to measure the depth,
But heard a dull silence!
