На берегу Красного моря, до высоты 120 метров над его уровнем возвышается гора Джебель-Накут. В переводе на русский язык — «звенящая (колокольная) гора». Сначала путешественник слышит будто жужжание волчка. Тональность звука то повышается, то понижается, он то таинственно замолкает, то опять возобновляется. И чем выше человек взбирается на гору, тем громче и продолжительнее звуки.
«Поющие горы» имеют достаточно широкое распространение на земном шаре, а их «пение» весьма разнообразно, и общим является лишь то, что пустынные горы «поют» на более низких нотах, а прибрежные — на более высоких.
Первое описание поющих гор оставлено в Китае более тысячи лет назад. В провинции Каньсу был известен холм высотой 150 метров. Между вершинами этого холма как будто находилось отверстие, которое не могли засыпать пески — настолько оно глубоко уходило под землю. В Праздник дракона жители поселений взбирались на холм и скатывались под его «пение», подобное барабанному бою. Необычайные звуки возникали на этой горе и сами по себе, без видимой причины.
На перуанском побережье странное явление, производящее звуки, подобные барабанной дроби или тарахтению моторной лодки, вызывало суеверный ужас у индейцев. Они считали пески заколдованными, остерегались их и обходили далеко стороною, так как были убеждены — звуки издают пляшущие мертвецы.
В России «поющие горы» известны на Кольском полуострове, Терском береге, на байкальском побережье полуострова Святой Нос и в ряде других мест. Геолог В.К. Маляревский рассказывал о «пении» на Кольском полуострове: «На мои шаги песок пляжа ответил глухим ворчанием. Я топнул ногой, песок взвизгнул... Налетевший порыв ветра взметнул песок, и вокруг меня всё запело, зазвенело. Поразительна была при этом чистота звука, напоминавшего переливы флейты".
Особенно громкий голос у 150-ти метрового бархана в Алма-Атинском национальном парке «Алтын-Эмель» на правом берегу реки Или. Феномен природы — «Поющий бархан» знаменит тем, что в сухую погоду его пески издают звуки, похожие на мелодию органа. Его гул и дрожание вызываются едва заметным осыпанием песка по склону, звук столь сильный, что иногда слышен за несколько километров. Люди, посетившие это любопытное место, рассказывают: если в безветренный день подняться на вершину бархана и сбежать по его склону вниз, возникает громкий, необычный звук, напоминающий рокот двигателей летящего самолёта.
Одна из легенд о Поющем Бархане связана с именем Пржевальского, который в прошлые времена входил в состав Императорского географического общества. Однажды, ему была поручена секретная миссия - посетить Тибет и провести переговоры с властью о возможном присоединении Тибета к России.
Его маршрут проходил через Среднюю Азию. Остановившись на ночлег в городе Верный, в настоящее время Алма-Ата, он услышал удивительные рассказы о Поющем Бархане, который считался местной достопримечательностью и очень его заинтересовал. Он, во что бы то ни стало, решил посмотреть на эту удивительную загадку природы.
Группа добралась до горы только вечером, и, разбив своеобразный лагерь, осталась на ночлег. В ту ночь внезапно поднялась буря, песок забивал все глаза, хлестал по лицам путешественников. Гора буквально грохотала, издавая дикие вопли. На группу путешественников напал неимоверный ужас и они в страхе разбежались подальше от ревущей горы. Пржевальский один остался у подножия и мужественно дождался утра. С приходом рассвета песчаная буря стихла, остальные путешественники вернулись к Поющей Горе, и продолжили свой поход. Буквально через несколько дней, Пржевальский внезапно заболел и скончался, так и не выполнив порученную ему дипломатическую миссию. Многие в то время считали, что эта трагедия была каким-то образом связана с Поющей Горой, но тайна эта так и осталась необъяснимой.

"Singing mountains" are quite widespread on the globe, and their "singing" is very diverse, and the only thing that is common is that the desert mountains "sing" at lower notes, and the coastal - at higher notes.
The first description of the singing mountains was left in China more than a thousand years ago. In Kansu province, a hill 150 meters high was known. Between the tops of this hill there seemed to be a hole that the sands could not fill up - it went so deep underground. During the Dragon Festival, the inhabitants of the villages climbed the hill and rolled down under its “singing”, similar to drumming. Extraordinary sounds arose on this mountain by themselves, for no apparent reason.
On the Peruvian coast, a strange phenomenon, producing sounds like drum rolls or the rattling of a motor boat, caused superstitious horror among the Indians. They considered the sands to be charmed, beware of them and walked far to the side, as they were convinced that the dancing dead made sounds.
In Russia, the “singing mountains” are known on the Kola Peninsula, the Tersky coast, on the Baikal coast of the Svyatoy Nos Peninsula and in a number of other places. Geologist V.K. Malyarevsky talked about “singing” on the Kola Peninsula: “The sand of the beach answered my steps with a dull grunt. I stamped my foot, the sand squealed ... A swelling gust of wind tossed the sand, and everything around me began to sing, ringing. What was striking was the purity of the sound, reminiscent of a flute. "
A particularly loud voice is heard at a 150-meter dune in the Alma-Ata National Park "Altyn-Emel" on the right bank of the Ili River. The phenomenon of nature - “Singing Dune” is famous for the fact that in dry weather its sands emit sounds similar to the melody of an organ. Its hum and trembling are caused by a barely noticeable scattering of sand along the slope, the sound is so strong that it is sometimes heard for several kilometers. People who visited this curious place tell: if on a calm day you climb to the top of the dune and run down its slope, a loud, unusual sound appears, reminiscent of the roar of the engines of a flying airplane.
One of the legends about the Singing Dune is associated with the name of Przhevalsky, who in past times was part of the Imperial Geographical Society. Once, he was entrusted with a secret mission - to visit Tibet and hold talks with the authorities about the possible accession of Tibet to Russia.
His route passed through Central Asia. Staying for the night in the city of Verny, now Alma-Ata, he heard amazing stories about the Singing Dune, which was considered a local attraction and was very interesting to him. By all means, he decided to look at this amazing mystery of nature.
The group reached the mountain only in the evening, and having set up a kind of camp, stayed for the night. That night a storm suddenly rose, the sand clogged all eyes, whipped on the faces of travelers. The mountain literally rumbled, uttering wild cries. Incredible horror attacked a group of travelers and they scattered in fear away from the roaring mountain. Przhevalsky alone remained at the foot and courageously waited for the morning. With the advent of dawn, the sandstorm subsided, the rest of the travelers returned to the Singing Mountain, and continued their trek. Just a few days later, Przhevalsky suddenly fell ill and died, without fulfilling the diplomatic mission entrusted to him. Many at that time believed that this tragedy was somehow connected with the Singing Mountain, but this mystery remained inexplicable.
