Так, на «The Second» прозвучала классическая «Magic Carpet Ride», «At Your Birthday Party» сопровождалась песней «Rock Me», попавшей в горячую десятку, «Monster» содержал заглавный хит-трек, «Steppenwolf Live» дал рождение «Hey Lawdy Mama». Тем временем состав группы неоднократно менялся. В 1968-м ушел Мореве, замещенный экс-участником «Sparrow» Ником Сент-Николасом, а тот в свою очередь в 1970-м уступил место Джорджу Биондо. Гитара же от Монарха перешла сначала к Ларри Байрому, а потом к Кенту Генри.
«Steppenwolf» оставались популярны и в начале 70-х, однако бесконечные сессии и гастроли настолько вымотали музыкантов, что в феврале 1972-го группа была официально распущена. Кей занялся выпуском сольных альбомов, хотя уже в 1974 году реанимировал проект с МакДжоном, Эдмонтоном, Биондо и новым гитаристом Бобби Кокрэном. Этот состав выдал три неплохих пластинки, но в 1976-м команда вновь распалась. Кей вернулся к сольной работе, а спустя некоторое время с удивлением обнаружил, что двое его бывших коллег гастролируют в заштатных клубах под вывеской «Steppenwolf». Возмущенному музыканту пришлось в судебном порядке отстаивать права, и в 1980 году проект вернулся к жизни с полностью обновленным составом и несколько измененным именем, «John Kay & Steppenwolf».
Музыкантам пришлось изрядно потрудиться, чтобы вернуть былое уважение, но постепенно они добились цели. The debut followed a series of successful albums, almost each of which contained at least one hit. So, on the "The Second", the classic "Magic Carpet Ride", At Your Birthday Party, was accompanied by the song "Rock Me", which fell into the hottest ten, "Monster" contained a title hit track, "SteppenWolf Live" gave birth "Hey Lawdy Mama. Meanwhile, the composition of the group has changed repeatedly. In 1968, Moraz left, substituted by the ex-participant "Sparrow" by Nick Saint Nicholas, and he in turn in the 1970s gave way to George Biono. The guitar has passed from the monarch first to Larry Bairome, and then to Kent Henry.
"SteppenWolf" remained popular and in the early 70s, but endless sessions and tours were so exhausted by the musicians that in February 1972 the group was officially dissolved. Kay engaged in the release of solo albums, although in 1974 he reanimated the project with Mackjon, Edmonton, Biono and the new guitarist Bobby Cocren. This composition issued three good plates, but in 1976 the team again broke up. Kay returned to solo work, and after some time he was surprised to find that two of his former colleagues toured in the spent clubs under the sign "SteppenWolf". The outrageous musician had to defend the rights in court, and in 1980 the project returned to life with a fully updated composition and a few modified name, John Kay & Steppenwolf.
Musicians had to be pretty to work well to return the former respect, but gradually they achieved goal. A significant role in restoring the reputation was played by Keem and his team the annual festival "Wolffest". His 25th anniversary of "SteppenWolf" was celebrated by triumphal tour of John's homeland, in East Germany. Unfortunately, from the second half of the 90s, the group suspended the release of studio works, and its public concerts became a relatively rare phenomenon.
