In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie that we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me, and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

The song was written during the Cold War (1985). Sting is afraid of nuclear strikes, and hopes that "the Russians also love their children," which means that it will help to keep the world from a terrible war. In this song about the Russians Sting used the melody of "Romance" from the suite "Lieutenant Kizhe" by Sergei Prokofiev.

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I do not like this view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I do not like this view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me, and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

In Europe and America, the feeling of hysteria is growing
In response to all threats
And rhetorical speeches of the Soviets.
Mr. Khrushchev said: "We will bury you"
I do not share this view
It will be very ignorant to do this,
If the Russians also love their children.

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly on common sense
On both sides of the political fence
We have one building,
And ideology is not important
Trust me when I say
I hope that the Russians also love their children.

This is not a historical precedent,
To overwhelm the president with words
This is not a victorious war,
This is a lie, we no longer believe in it,
Mr. Reagan says: "We will protect you"
I do not share this view
Trust me when I say
I hope that the Russians also love their children.

We have one building,
And ideology is not important
What can save us - you and me,
The fact that the Russians also love their children.
