Все, кто знаком с творчеством Сенсационной Группы Алекса Харви, знают, что у группы был удивительный талант делать необычные каверы всем знакомых песен, причем из самых разных жанров популярной музыки. Альбом The Penthouse Tapes демонстрирует этот талант группы в полной мере: только три номера в альбоме - собственного сочинения, остальные - каверы таких разношерстных авторов, как Ирвинг Берлин, группа Osmonds или Алис Купер. Получились, казалось бы, не связанные между собой вещи, однако общий настрой, озорная харизма и теплый юмор Алекса легко соединяют все это в один спектакль, буффонаду, какие он устраивал на сцене.
Альбом открывается оригинальным номером Алекса и его бэнда - I Wanna Have You Back (Хочу, чтоб ты вернулась) - это буги в стиле глэм-рока, по своему ритму и гитарному звучанию напоминает T.Rex в их лучшие электрические времена. По словам Алекса, I Wanna Have You Back - "поп-песня, написанная в случайной ярости под вдохновением от гитарных риффов, наигранных Залом".
Один из оригинальных номеров альбома Jungle Jenny - про девушку Дженни, которая выросла в джунглях среди горилл, и была для них всеобщим предметом обожания, но нашла кусочек цивилизации - глянцевый журнал, в котором соблазнилась гламурными фотографиями красавчика Уилли. Дженни покинула джунгли, разыскала в городах этого Уилли, но все, чего удостоилась в этой цивилизации - стала работать живым тестером, то есть испытывала на себе новые виды губной помады и прочей химии. Penthouse tapes "is the sixth album by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, released in 1976 by Vertigo. Everyone who is familiar with the work of Alex Harvey's Sensational Band knows that the group had an amazing talent for making unusual covers of songs that were familiar to everyone, and from a variety of genres of popular music. The album The Penthouse Tapes demonstrates this talent of the group to the fullest: only three numbers in the album are of their own composition, the rest are covers of such motley authors as Irving Berlin, the Osmonds or Alice Cooper. The result was seemingly unrelated things, but Alex's general mood, mischievous charisma and warm humor easily combine all this into one performance, the buffoonery he staged on stage.
The album opens with the original number of Alex and his band - I Wanna Have You Back - this boogie in the style of glam rock, in its rhythm and guitar sound reminiscent of T.Rex in their best electric times. In the words of Alex, I Wanna Have You Back is "a pop song written in random rage, inspired by the guitar riffs played by Hall."
One of the original issues of the Jungle Jenny album is about the girl Jenny, who grew up in the jungle among the gorillas, and was a universal adoration for them, but found a piece of civilization - a glossy magazine in which she was seduced by glamorous photographs of handsome Willie. Jenny left the jungle, looked for this Willie in the cities, but all that was awarded in this civilization was to work as a living tester, that is, she tested new types of lipstick and other chemicals.
