И город нам свалится прямо в ладони,
Как сладкий, вызревший плод...
Там робкое войско и слабый правитель,
И обветшала стена,
А звонкой казны - хоть лопатой гребите.
И век не выпить вина!
Мы там по трактирам оглохнем от здравиц,
Устанем от грабежей
И славно утешим веселых красавиц,
Оставшихся без мужей!..
Когда перед нами ворота открыли,
Мы ждали - вынесут ключ,
Но копья сверкнули сквозь облако пыли,
Как молнии из-за туч!..
Нас кони втоптали в зелёные травы,
Нам стрелы пробили грудь.
Нас вождь иноземный послал на расправу
Себе расчищая путь!
Смеялись на небе могучие Боги,
Кровавой тешились игрой.
Мы все полегли, не дождавшись подмоги,
Но каждый пал как герой!
Давно не держали мы трусов в отряде -
На том широком лугу
Из нас ни один не молил о пощаде,
Никто не сдался врагу!
Другие утешили вдов белогрудых,
Сложили в мешки казну.
А мы за воротами сном беспробудным
Которую спим весну!..
Погибель отцов - не в науку мальчишкам:
Любой с пеленок боец!
Бросаются в пламя, не зная, что слишком
Печален будет конец.
И скорбную мудрость, подобную нашей,
Постигнут в свой смертный час...
Налейте наёмникам полные чаши!
Пусть выпьют в память о нас!

The mighty Gods laughed in the sky,
Bloody amused the game.
We all died without waiting for help,
But everyone fell like a hero!
We have not kept cowards in the squad for a long time -
On that wide meadow
Not one of us begged for mercy,
Nobody surrendered to the enemy!
Others consoled the white-breasted widows,
We put the treasury in bags.
And we are outside the gates with a deep sleep
Which we sleep in the spring! ..
The death of fathers is not a science for boys:
Any fighter from the cradle!
Throw themselves into flames, not knowing too much
The end will be sad.
And mournful wisdom like ours
Comprehended in their hour of death ...
Pour bowls full for the mercenaries!
Let them drink in memory of us!
