...Валары — стихии Мира, творившие Арду по замыслу Эру — Единого, в начале времён ушли из Средиземья на запад, на континент Аман. Там они основали страну Валинор, где долгие годы царили мир и покой. Одна из Валар — Йаванна создала Два Древа Валинора, которые приносили в мир свет и тепло, когда Солнца и Луны ещё не существовало. Первое дерево в Валиноре звалось Тэльперион, а второе — Лаурелин. За семь часов каждое дерево разгоралось и угасало; и каждое начинало сиять вновь за час до того, как тускнело другое. Потому в Валиноре дважды в день наступал дивный час, когда свет обоих деревьев был слаб, и их золотистые и серебряные лучи смешивались — Час Слияния Света...Феанор, сын короля нолдоров, в годы наивысшего расцвета Валинора, дабы сохранить свет и магию Древ, создал волшебные драгоценные камни — Сильмариллы, величайшую драгоценность Древнего Мира, в которые вложил дивный свет Лаурелина и Тельпериона. Мелькор, падший Валар, пожелал обладать Сильмариллами. Он привлек на свою сторону гигантскую паучиху Унголианту, и под прикрытием её тёмной магии, пробрался на Священную гору и уничтожил Древа.
Тьма и отчаянье опустились на Валинор. Валары воззвали к Феанору, дабы он разбил Сильмариллы, хранившие свет и силу священных Древ, ибо это был единственный способ вернуть их к жизни. Пока Феанор размышлял, горестные вести пришли из крепости Форменос: Мелькор убил короля нолдоров и похитил Сильмариллы. Феанор и его сыновья поклялись в том, что будут преследовать Мелькора и всех, кто пожелает обладать волшебными камнями. Они призывали всех эльфов покинуть Валинор и отправиться в Средиземье. Валары пытались отговорить их, но всё было напрасно — многие нолдоры вняли призыву Феанора. Так начался Исход нолдоров. Первым препятствием на их пути стало море, отделяющее Валинор от Средиземья. На его берегах издавна жил народ тэлери — родичи нолдоров и искусные корабелы. Феанор потребовал у них корабли, чтобы перебраться на них через море, но тэлери отказали ему. Тогда нолдоры решили взять корабли силой. Так началась первая битва между эльфами.
Тэлери не смогли одержать верх, и многие были убиты в тот день, а нолдоры завладели их кораблями. За эту братоубийственную резню Валары отреклись от нолдоров, и Валар Мандос изрёк проклятье, которое легло на каждого в этом походе.
