Уже спустя год после начала профессиональных занятий с Сальери, в 1813 году, Шуберт написал свою Первую симфонию. Создавалась она ко дню рождения директора конвикта, Инноценция Ланга, и была ему посвящена. Но вместе с тем эта симфония была протестом против жизни в конвикте. Недаром на последней странице партитуры юный композитор написал: «Finis et fine» — «Окончание и конец», имея в виду конец своего пребывания в этом учебном заведении. Шуберт вскоре попросту сбежал из него. Впрочем, возможно, если бы он этого не сделал, его бы выгнали за неуспеваемость — отдававший все время и прилежание музыке, на остальные предметы юный музыкант совсем не обращал внимания, и директор, тот самый Ланг, постоянно грозил ему исключением.
Официально премьера Первой симфонии состоялась только 19 февраля 1881 года, более чем через полвека со дня смерти композитора, в Лондоне под управлением Августа Манна.
В первом симфоническом опыте Шуберта все еще дышит венской классикой, господствуют юношески-беззаботные танцевальные напевы, добродушный юмор Гайдна, легкость и изящество Моцарта
