Согласно другой истории, Гизер и Тони на репетиции, представляя новые музыкальные идеи Оззи и Биллу, выдали независимо друг от друга один и тот же рифф.
Оригинальный виниловый диск, ныне являющийся раритетом, был выпущен с раскрывающейся обложкой. На развороте её был изображен перевернутый крест с коротким стихотворением внутри:
А дождь всё льёт и льёт. Завесы тьмы окутывают почерневшие деревья, и они, искорёженные какой-то невидимой силою, роняют усталые листья и клонят ветви к усыпанной птичьими крыльями серой земле. Пред жестикулирующей смертью маки в траве истекают кровью, а намертво захваченные капканами юные крольчата бездвижно застыли, будто охраняя окружающее безмолвие, которое грозит поглотить всех тех, кто в него вслушается. Уставшие от непрестанного ужаса вчерашнего дня немые птицы сбиваются в стаи в самых тёмных уголках, отворачивая головы от мёртвого чёрного лебедя, что плывет кверху брюхом в лощине по глади маленького пруда. От пруда этого исходит легкий сладострастный туман, прокладывающий себе путь наверх, чтобы ласкать ноги безголовой статуи мученика, единственное достижение которого состояло в том, что он умер слишком рано, так и не дождавшись отпущения грехов. Поток тьмы проявляется во всем своем величии, и начинается длинная чёрная ночь, а юная дева у озера всё ждёт и ждёт. Не видя, она мнит себя невидимой и украдкой улыбается дальнему колокольному звону и дождю, что всё льёт и льёт….
Оригинальная европейская версия альбома содержит композицию «Evil Woman» с одноименного сингла, который был выпущен ещё до выхода альбома; он открывает его вторую сторону. На американской версии диска первый трек стороны Б — композиция «Wicked World» (которая в свою очередь была стороной Б на сингле «Evil Woman»).

Recorded in just three days (8 hours of studio work) and costing the band just £ 1200, Black Sabbath's debut album is now considered a heavy metal classic. On the IGN Music list (Top 25 Metal Albums), he is in 13th place (the group's second album, Paranoid, comes in second here, behind Master of Puppets (Metallica)).
The title track (which was named after a 1964 film starring Boris Karloff and in turn renamed the band, then known as Earth) came after Geezer Butler took Ozzy Osbourne's 16th century book on black magic ... “… I woke up in the middle of the night: a figure in black stood at the far end of the bed. A few seconds later, it seemed to dissolve, forcing me to experience a moment of unforgettable horror ... I told Ozzy about this, and, apparently, this story stuck in his memory. As soon as we started playing Black Sabbath, he immediately gave out the entire text ... After all this it became clear: there can be no other name for our band! "
According to another story, Geezer and Tony in rehearsal, presenting new musical ideas to Ozzy and Bill, played the same riff independently of each other.
The original vinyl disc, now a rarity, was released with a fold-out cover. Its centerfold featured an inverted cross with a short poem inside:
And the rain keeps pouring and pouring. Veils of darkness envelop the blackened trees, and they, twisted by some invisible force, drop their tired leaves and bend their branches to the gray earth strewn with bird's wings. Before the gesturing death, the poppies in the grass bleed, and the young rabbits tightly captured by traps froze motionless, as if guarding the surrounding silence that threatens to swallow all those who listen to it. Tired of the incessant horror of yesterday, the mute birds huddle in flocks in the darkest corners, turning their heads away from the dead black swan that floats upside down in the hollow along the smooth surface of a small pond. A light, voluptuous mist emanates from this pond, making its way upward to caress the feet of the headless statue of the martyr, whose only achievement was that he died too early, without waiting for absolution. The stream of darkness manifests itself in all its greatness, and the long black night begins, and the young maiden by the lake waits and waits. Without seeing, she imagines herself invisible and furtively smiles at the distant bell ringing and rain that everything is pouring and pouring….
The original European version of the album contains the song "Evil Woman" from the single of the same name, which was released before the album was released; he opens his second side. On the American version of the disc, the first track of side B is "Wicked World" (which in turn was side B on the single "Evil Woman").
