"Это произведение раннехристианской письменности было известно учителям древности, и некоторыми из них, в частности св. Иринеем (Adv. haer. IV 20, 2), Тертуллианом (De orat. 16), Климентом Александрийским (Strom. 117, 29; II1, 9,12,13) и Оригеном (In Matth. 14 21; De princ. IV 11) причислялось к книгам Священного Писания. Упоминает о нем и так называемый Мураториев фрагмент. Св. Афанасий Великий назвал Пастыря "весьма полезной книгой" (De incarnat. verbi). Ориген отозвался о Пастыре так: puto Hermas sit scriptor ... Scriptura mihi videtur utilis et utputo divinitus inspirata. Евсевий (НЕ III 3; 25), свидетельствуя о том, что Пастырь читался во время богослужений, причислял его, однако, к книгам подложным (). Так называемый Синайский кодекс включил Пастыря вместе с посланием псевдо-Варнавы в число книг Нового Завета, а абиссинская традиция приписывала его даже самому апостолу Павлу."Святой Апостол от 70-ти Ерм (Ерма)- римский гражданин, но по происхождению грек. Жил в конце I века. Был епископом в Филиппополе Фракийском. О Ерме упоминается апостолом Павлом в Послании к Римлянам: «приветствуйте Асигкриста, Флегонта, Ерма» (Рим. 16, 14).
Ерм — автор книги «Пастырь», написать которую его побудили откровения свыше. В самом «Пастыре» о его авторе сообщается, что он жил в Риме во время папы Климента, был сначала богат, занимался мирскими делами, имел злоязычную жену и порочных сыновей, к которым не был достаточно строг, и за это наказан от Бога потерей богатства. Недоумевая о причинах постигшего его бедствия, Ерм был вразумлен об этом в ряде бывших ему видений. Эти видения и наставления и составляют содержание книги. По форме изложения «Пастырь» принадлежит к числу апокалиптических произведений. Книга имела такое влияние, что временно вносилась, как составная часть, в Библию, но не вошла в окончательный канон Священного Писания. В историческом отношении книга весьма замечательна, представляя итог христианского нравоучения, как оно сложилось в эпоху Ерма, и яркую картину состояния церкви в конце I или начале II вв. Автор порицает представителей церкви за несогласия и споры о преимуществах, а все христианское общество — за отклонение от служения Богу в сторону греховного языческого мира, за склонность к роскоши и к чувственным удовольствиям, за забвение бедных. Забота о бедных у автора доходит до того, что даже пост у него заповедуется как средство сберечь часть обычной пищи — для бедных. Автор указывает на близость второго Христова пришествия и общего суда. Вообще тенденция "Пастыря" — возвратить общество к первобытной христианской простоте жизни и непорочности нравов.

Yerm is the author of the book The Shepherd, which he was inspired to write with revelations from above. In the Shepherd, his author is informed that he lived in Rome during the time of Pope Clement, was at first wealthy, engaged in worldly affairs, had a hard-hearted wife and vicious sons who were not strict enough, and for this he was punished from God by the loss of wealth . Wondering about the causes of the calamity that had befallen him, Yerm was reminded of this in a number of his visions. These visions and instructions constitute the content of the book. In the form of the exposition "Shepherd" belongs to the number of apocalyptic works. The book had such an influence that it was temporarily introduced as a component part of the Bible, but it did not enter into the final canon of the Holy Scripture. Historically, the book is very remarkable, presenting the result of Christian morality, as it was in the epoch of Erma, and a vivid picture of the state of the church at the end of the first or the beginning of the second century. The author blames the representatives of the church for disagreements and disputes over the benefits, and the whole Christian society for deviating from serving God in the direction of the sinful pagan world, for propensity for luxury and for sensual pleasures, for oblivion of the poor. The author takes care of the poor with the fact that even fasting is commanded as a means to save part of the usual food - for the poor. The author points out the proximity of the second Advent of Christ and the general judgment. In general, the tendency of the "Shepherd" is to restore society to the primitive Christian simplicity of life and integrity of manners.
