18 октября 1989 года с авиабазы , что находится недалеко от Баку, один за другим взлетали ИЛ-76, унося выполнивший свою задачу десант домой. В шестнадцатый по счету самолет, борт № 569, загрузалась 8-ая рота 217 ПДП из Болградской дивизии. Самолет взмыл в небо.
Во время набора высоты воздушный стрелок Александр Андрияш по внутренней связи сообщил о возгорании одного из двигателей. Тот час же была задействована система аварийного пожаротушения, командир борта Калмыков принял решение вернуться на аэродром, с которого только что взлетели. Во время разворота и последующего снижения старший бортовой техник Евгений Андреев раз за разом пытался активировать систему пожаротушения. Он не знал, что в результате микровзрыва разлетевшиеся лопасти турбины перебили не только топливные шланги, спровоцировав пожар, но и разрушили управление системой пожаротушения. Все попытки экипажа справиться с огнем были заранее обречены на неудачу. До спасительной взлетно-посадочной полосы оставалось еще несколько километров, когда уже вся плоскость крыла была объята пламенем. Отвалился и упал в море разрушенный двигатель. У летчиков, конечно, были с собой парашюты. Несмотря на малую высоту, они могли попытаться покинуть борт и спастись. Но десант был без куполов. О том, чтобы бросить десантников, не могло быть и речи, летчики продолжали бороться за свои и чужие жизни.
Несмотря на самоотверженные действия экипажа, не в их силах было удержать самолет в воздухе. Ослабленная огнем конструкция крыла начала разрушаться, Ил-76 резко накренился и рухнул в воду. Самолет упал на мелководье, с берега были хорошо видны хвост и часть фюзеляжа. Тут же снарядили катера и моторные лодки. Но штормовой северный ветер поднимал огромные волны, у спасателей ни разу не получилось даже подойти к остаткам самолета, среди которых надеялись обнаружить живых. После нескольких неудачных попыток, когда уже совсем стемнело, спасательную операцию прекратили.
В момент падения в самолете находились 48 десантников 8-ой роты, многие из которых были без пяти минут дембеля, 2 человека из наземных служб аэродрома и 7 членов экипажа Ил-76. Всего погибло 57 человек. ВДВ и ВТА до последнего мига оставались вместе.

All attempts by the crew to cope with the fire were doomed to failure in advance. A few kilometers remained before the rescue runway, when the entire plane of the wing was already engulfed in flames. A destroyed engine fell off and fell into the sea. The pilots, of course, had parachutes with them. Despite the low altitude, they could try to leave the side and escape. But the landing was without domes. There was no question of abandoning the paratroopers; the pilots continued to fight for their own and others' lives.
Despite the selfless actions of the crew, it was not in their power to keep the aircraft in the air. The wing structure weakened by fire began to collapse, the IL-76 sharply banked and crashed into the water. The plane crashed in shallow water, the tail and part of the fuselage were clearly visible from the shore. Boats and motor boats were immediately equipped. But the stormy north wind lifted huge waves, the rescuers never managed to even approach the remains of the aircraft, among whom they hoped to find the living. After several unsuccessful attempts, when it was already completely dark, the rescue operation was stopped.
At the time of the fall, 48 paratroopers of the 8th company were on the plane, many of which were five to five minutes of demobilization, 2 people from the ground services of the airfield and 7 members of the IL-76 crew.
