Александровская слобода, царские палаты. Андрей Морозов, мучительно колеблясь, принимает посвящение в опричники. Через силу дает он страшную клятву верности — отрекается от земщины, дружбы и родни, от любимой матери. С радостью ловит признаки его колебания приближенный царя — холодно-жестокий князь Вязьминский, ненавидящий весь род Морозовых и мысленно уже готовящий Андрею ловушку.
