OLD TESTAMENT
Proverbs of Solomon

CHAPTER 17.

1Let a piece of dry bread, and with it peace, rather than a house full of slaughtered cattle, with strife.

2The mad slave rules over the dissolute son and divide the inheritance between the brothers.

3The cloak is for silver, and the crucible is for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.

4 The wicked man hearkeneth to the mouth of the wicked; the liar heareth the tongue of perdition.

5 He who curses a beggar, blasphemes his Creator; He who rejoices in misfortune will not remain unpunished [and the merciful will be pardoned].

6 The old man's crown is the sons of sons, and the glory of children is their parents. [The faithful have a whole world of wealth, and the infidel has neither an obol.]

7It does not matter to a stupid, important speech, especially to a noble one - lips lying.

8 A gift is a precious stone in the eyes of him that possesseth it: whithersoever he turneth, he shall prosper.

9 He that seeth the transgression seeketh love; but who again reminds him, he removes a friend.

The reproach is more effective than the stupid one hundred strokes.

11The thief searches only evil; therefore a cruel angel will be sent against him.

12 It is better to meet a man with a bear, deprived of children, rather than a fool with his stupidity.

13Who reproves evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.

The beginning of the quarrel was like a breakthrough in water; Leave a quarrel before it flared up.

15 He who justifies the wicked and accuses the righteous is both an abomination to the Lord.

16Why is the treasure in the hands of a fool? To acquire wisdom, he has no intelligence. [He who makes his home high, he seeks to break; and the deviator will fall into trouble.]

17Thus he loves at all times and, like a brother, will appear in times of adversity.

A man who is half-witted gives his hand and guarantees for his neighbor.

19 He loves quarrels, loves sin, and whoever raises his gates high, he seeks a fall.

The covetous heart will not find good, and the crafty tongue will get into trouble.

21 He gave birth to a fool, to himself on the mountain, and the father of the foolish will not rejoice.

22 A good heart is good as a medicine, and a dull spirit dries bones.

The unrighteous one takes a present from the bosom to pervert the ways of justice.

Wisdom is before the reasonable, and the eyes of a fool are at the end of the earth.

25 A stupid son is an annoyance to his father, and grief for his mother.

26 It is not good to blame the right, and to beat the nobles for the truth.

The madman abstains in his words, and the prudent is cold-blooded.

28And a fool, when he is silent, may seem wise, and he that shutteth his mouth, is prudent.
