(Книга Чисел 13; 14)Бог повелел Моисею послать двенадцать человек осмотреть Ханаанскую землю, в которую Он намеревался ввести сынов Израиля. Поэтому необходимо было избрать одного представителя из руководителей каждого колена. Посланные отправились и спустя сорок дней возвратились; представ пред Моисеем и Аароном и всем обществом Израильским, они показали им плоды той земли. Все, увидев роскошные фрукты, принесенные в качестве доказательства, согласились с тем, что земля хороша. Среди плодов красовались гранаты и смоквы, в изобилии росшие в той земле, а огромную кисть винограда несли на шесте два человека.
Рассказав о богатстве и плодородии Ханаанской земли, все возвратившиеся, кроме двоих, стали с тревогой утверждать, что народ Израильский не сможет ею овладеть. Они говорили, что люди, живущие там, очень сильны, что их города окружены толстыми и высокими стенами, и, что самое страшное, среди них есть исполины, сыны "от исполинского рода" Енакова. Описав, где какой народ живет в Ханаанской земле, они в заключение заявили, что израильтяне никогда не смогут овладеть ею.
Выслушав донесение, евреи дали волю своему разочарованию, плача и бросая горькие упреки Моисею. О непреклонной вере в то, что Господь, приведший их на это место, конечно же, даст им в наследие эту землю, не могло быть и речи. Они тут же впали в отчаяние; имея ограниченное представление о силе Святого Бога и не доверяя Тому, Кто все это время вел их по пустыне, люди упрекали Моисея и в отчаянии говорили друг другу: "Вот, пришел конец всем нашим надеждам. "Там видели мы и исполинов, сынов Енаковых, - говорили они, - от исполинского рода; и мы были в глазах наших пред ними, как саранча, такими же были мы и в глазах их".
И снова Израиль ропщет
"И подняло все общество вопль, и плакал народ во всю ту ночь. И роптали на Моисея и Аарона все сыны Израилевы, и все общество сказало им: о, если бы мы умерли в земле Египетской, или умерли бы в пустыне сей!.. Жены наши и дети наши достанутся в добычу врагам. Не лучше ли нам возвратиться в Египет? И сказали друг другу: поставим себе начальника и возвратимся в Египет. И пали Моисей и Аарон на лица свои пред всем собранием общества сынов Израилевых".
Израильтяне не только дали волю жалобам на Моисея, но и обвинили Самого Бога в том, что Он обманул их, пообещав дать землю, которой они не в силах овладеть. Их мятежный дух разошелся настолько, что, забыв о несокрушимой силе Всемогущего, выведшего весь народ из земли Египетской и явившего им столько чудес на протяжении всего их странствования по пустыне, они решили избрать себе нового предводителя, чтобы вернуться обратно в Египет, где они были рабами и терпели немыслимые лишения. Caleb and Joshua tried to reason with them, but the people were so excited that they could not and did not want to listen to the voice of these husbands.
