(Деяния святых Апостолов 9:1-22)Разум Савла был потрясен величественной смертью Стефана. Его предубеждения против христиан были поколеблены, но в конце концов аргументы священников и старейшин убедили молодого иудея в том, что Стефан являлся богохульником, Иисус Христос, Которого он проповедовал, был самозванцем, а поставленные на святое служение священники - правы. Будучи человеком решительным и весьма целеустремленным, Савл стал ярым противником христианства, решив раз и навсегда, что священники и книжники правы. Подобный характер имела ревность Иакова и Иоанна, когда они хотели низвести огонь с неба для наказания тех, кто пренебрегал их Учителем и презирал Его.
Савл собирался отправиться по личным делам в Дамаск, но при этом вознамерился отыскать там всех верующих во Христа. Для этой цели он получил у первосвященника письма, чтобы зачитать их в синагогах. Эти письма давали ему право хватать всех, кого он заподозрит в вере во Христа, и отсылать под стражей в Иерусалим, где их ждали суд и наказание. Когда утомленные путники приближались к Дамаску, взору Савла предстали обширные просторы плодородных земель, прекрасные сады и виноградники, орошаемые холодными ручьями, которые, журча среди сочной и яркой зелени, стекали с окрестных гор. После длительного путешествия по безлюдной пустыне эта картина радовала глаз. С восторгом смотрели Савл и его спутники на простирающиеся поля и сады, как вдруг свет ярче солнца осиял их с неба. "Он упал на землю и услышал голос, говорящий ему: Савл, Савл! что ты гонишь Меня? Он сказал: кто Ты, Господи? Господь же сказал: Я Иисус, Которого ты гонишь; трудно тебе идти против рожна".
Видение Христа
Произошло немалое замешательство. Спутники Савла были объяты ужасом, сильный свет почти ослепил их. Они слышали голос, но никого не видели. Все происходящее было непонятно и таинственно. Только Савл, лежащий распростертым на земле, понял сказанные ему с неба слова и ясно увидел перед собой Сына Божьего. Одного лишь взгляда на эту славную Личность было достаточно для того, чтобы в сознании этого пораженного иудея навсегда запечатлелся образ Спасителя. Сказанные с неба слова дошли до глубины его сердца с потрясающей силой. Поток света озарил его заблуждающийся разум, открыв его прежнее невежество и ошибки. Савл понял, что, преследуя последователей Христа и считая, что служит Богу, он в действительности выполнял дьявольскую работу.
Все его убеждения и понятие о долге основывались, главным образом, на безграничном доверии священникам и начальникам, которые благодаря вверенным им священным обязанностям оказывали огромное влияние на его суждения, и это заставило его поверить в то, что история о воскресении Иисуса - всего лишь искусная выдумка Его учеников. Теперь, когда Христос открылся Савлу, он отчетливо вспомнил проповедь Стефана перед синедрионом. Священники обвинили мученика в богохульстве, но с этой минуты Савл знал, что его свидетельство было истинным. Во время чудесного озарения мозг его работал с неимоверной скоростью. Вспомнив последовательно все пророчества о грядущем Мессии, он понял, что отвержение Иисуса иудеями, Его распятие, воскресение и вознесение были предсказаны пророками еще в глубокой древности. Теперь Савл обнаружил, что именно Иисус и был Тем Самым обетованным Мессией. Он вспомнил слова Стефана: "Я вижу небеса отверстые и Сына Человеческого, стоящего одесную Бога" (Деян. 7:56) и убедился, что умирающий мученик взирал на Царство славы.

When weary travelers approached Damascus, Savel's gaze showed vast expanses of fertile lands, beautiful gardens and vineyards, irrigated by cold streams, which, murmuring amid lush and bright greenery, drained from the surrounding mountains. The Vision of Christ
There was considerable confusion. Saul's companions were horrified, a strong light almost blinded them. They heard a voice, but saw no one. Everything that happened was mysterious and mysterious. All his beliefs and the notion of duty were based mainly on the boundless trust of priests and superiors who, thanks to the sacred duties entrusted to him, exerted a tremendous influence on his judgments, and this made him believe that the story of the resurrection of Jesus is but a clever invention His disciples. Now that Christ was revealed to Saul, he distinctly remembered Stephen's preaching before the Sanhedrin. The priests accused the martyr of blasphemy, but from that moment Saul knew that his testimony was true. During the miraculous illumination, his brain worked with incredible speed. Recalling successively all the prophecies about the coming Messiah, he realized that the rejection of Jesus by the Jews, His crucifixion, resurrection and ascension were predicted by the prophets in ancient times. Now Saul found out that it was Jesus who was the Most Promised Messiah. He remembered Stephen's words: "I see the heavens open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God" (Acts 7:56) and made sure that the dying martyr looked at the Kingdom of glory.
